KZN lamb shows hold their own at the SAFJA awards
Boytjie Crispin receives the SAFJA award for 2024 Champion Lamb Show from Greg Talbot of Tal-Tec, on behalf of the Delareyville Rooivleis Expo.
KwaZulu-Natal shows featured strongly in the Champion Lamb Show category at the South African Fatstock Judging Association’s (SAFJA) gala awards held on Friday evening at Platrand Lodge near Ladysmith, where the Royal Agricultural Show (86.60) and the Underberg Show (82.10) were awarded second and third places respectively.
The Delareyville Rooivleis Expo took top honours by a hair’s breadth, with its score of 86.70 earning it first place in the country.
SAFJA judges its Lamb Shows on a combination of the quality of the lambs, the number of people attending the show, the show’s social media presence, and the opportunities provided for those exhibiting to be educated to produce better lambs.
Senior Judge Johan Odendaal emphasized that in scoring show societies for these awards, SAFJA rewards shows that encourage farmers to attend the live judging on the hoof. The more farmers in attendance, the better, as it is vital to educate farmers in order to improve breeds.
Congratulations to the Delareyville Rooivleis Expo organisers and exhibiting farmers for holding South Africa’s best 2024 fat lamb show!
Barry du Plessis receives the SAFJA award for 2024 First Reserve Lamb Show from SAFJA Secretary Andrew Adams, on behalf of the Royal Agricultural Society.
Storm Storah receives the SAFJA award for the 2024 Second Reserve Lamb Show from Greg Talbot of Tal-Tec, on behalf of the Underberg Show.
